Tesco Extends “Perfectly Imperfect” Fruit Range

Tesco has extended its Perfectly Imperfect range to include berries saved from food waste by freezing them.

Tesco reviewed its operations in producing frozen fruit products and found that there was some fruit that was getting wasted in the process.

We get a lot of broken fruit pieces on the production line, especially with raspberries,” it says. “There are also wonky, small, misshapen and slightly damaged fruit. This fruit is still edible; it might just look a little wonky.”

Tesco decided to put all this fruit in a mixed frozen berry bag to save it being wasted.

“We’re now selling 22,500 packs a week making it our third biggest frozen fruit line,” it says. “The mixed berries are perfect for using in smoothies, for baking or as breakfast toppers.”

The Perfectly Imperfect range looks to take out-of-spec or “wonky” fruit and vegetables and offer them to customers to help prevent food waste on farms and in production.

The range includes cucumbers, strawberries, courgettes, pears and many other popular fruits and vegetables. 68m portions of fruit have been saved from going to waste through our Perfectly Imperfect range.

“Whilst visual appearance is still important for many customers we know that it is taste that’s really important, at great value prices.

“Our growers have told us that they love the Perfectly Imperfect range, because it means we can take much more of the crop. We love it because it allows us to make the most of the fresh produce we can sell in our stores.”

Launching this product is part of Tesco’s ongoing work to tackle food waste wherever it occurs – from farm to fork.

Tesco says it believes that no food that could be eaten should be wasted. It has committed that no food that is safe for human consumption will go to waste from Tesco UK Retail operations by the end of 2017.
